Eastern bowling alley openig postponed

The carpet delivered for the bowling alley of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union was the wrong kind, causing a delay in the ribbon cutting ceremony of more than a week.

The bowling alley was remodeled with new electronic score screens and new pin setters over last semester while the new food court was being built above it. The bowling alley’s new carpet was delivered Monday and scheduled for installation on Tuesday.

But the carpet that was delivered was the wrong kind because it was misordered by a liaison between the contractors and Eastern, Tim Taslanger, Union bowling and billiard center manager, said.

“It is the wrong design, we wanted cosmic bowl, which has pins and bowling balls on it, but we got Space Voyage, which has space ships,” he said. “The guy admitted he screwed up.”

However, Taslanger said he could not remember the name of the person.

“All I know is he works up in Chicago and is kind of a go-between for the university and the contractors,” he said.

Taslanger said it will take another two weeks to get the right carpet delivered and installed.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the renovated bowling alley was scheduled for the middle of next week, but now it has been pushed back to Feb. 1, he said.

Despite the lack of carpet, the bowling alley was open Tuesday, its first day of business, and will continue to be open.

Taslanger said the first nights business was good because Eastern’s Bowling Club and other clubs filled the lanes.

“We have some mats that people can wipe their feet before they get on the (lanes) so they don’t get dirty,” he said.
