Decatur diabetes walk draws Eastern students

A walk for diabetes in Decatur has enlisted several Eastern students who are looking for support and more walkers.

The American Diabetes Association’s 29th annual America’s Walk for Diabetes will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fairview Park, in Decatur.

“Participants can walk individually or in teams of five or six, and are required to raise a minimum of $75 of support,” said Michelle Stroup, a junior elementary education major, who is participating in the walk for the first time this year.

Stroup suggested participants contribute $25 to themselves, then ask family members and employers to donate money.

“Employers or businesses might agree to match whatever you raise,” she said.

Participants have the incentive of winning T-shirts, sweatshirts and gift certificates based on the amount of support they raise, she said.

“The reason why I chose to do this is I was really amazed to find out in some of the literature that I read that 16 million Americans have diabetes, and the least that I can do is go on a walk,” Stroup said.

Anyone wanting to donate support money or looking for a group to participate with in the walk with can call Stroup at (217)875-9011.
