UB brings new music events to campus

Acoustic Java, Studio 7 and Chucktown Live may all sound like night spots found in a big city, but they are right here at Eastern.

The three are part of a brand new mini-concert series the University Board is beginning today.

Singer and acoustic guitar player Rusty Bladen will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 7th Street Underground to kick off what the UB has coined “Acoustic Java.”

Dina Tenuto, the UB mini concert coordinator, said the UB is looking for student acts for future performances at Acoustic Java.

“We’re trying to bring more student talent onto the campus,” Tenuto said. “There’s so much out there.”

She said today’s event is an outlet for students in the middle of the day.

“You can grab some Subway, sit and relax,” she said.

The UB is considering offering mochachinos at the event, and free drinks may be available.

Tenuto said the purpose behind Acoustic Java, Studio 7 and Chucktown Live is to introduce more entertainment with a diversity of music styles to try to reach all aspects of Eastern.

Studio 7 is a club series that will take place every other Thursday night, rotating with Campus Perk. The first Studio 7 will be from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sept. 6 in the 7th Street Underground, and the event will feature a live DJ.

“We’re looking to do something different every other Thursday night,” Tenuto said. “The first night is a retro night, and there may be a salsa night later on.”

She said the UB wants the 7th Street Underground to transform into a club for this series.

“We’ll push the tables away, and there will be dancing,” she said. “A lot of people like to go to Mom’s and Stu’s, but most people are just there to dance. This is just the same thing without the alcohol.”

Chucktown Live is a series of performances by live bands that will take place every other Saturday in the 7th Street Underground.

Tenuto said the UB is trying to choose bands of a variety of music styles.

“The band last Saturday was a ska band,” she said. “We don’t want to have every other Saturday be a cover band. You can only listen to so many Blink 182 cover songs.”

Diva Bands, The Last Resorts, Nature’s Gravy and 72 Hours all will perform in the coming weeks, she said.

The UB has already sponsored two performances by live bands and a welcome dance for freshmen this year, and Tenuto said they were all big successes.

“People seem to really be enjoying themselves at these shows,” she said. “This year looks really promising.”

The UB is looking for all kinds of acts for Acoustic Java, including acoustic acts,
