Band rocks show for freshmen

“Good music. Free popcorn.”

These words summed up the experience of watching the band Four Banger play in the 7th Street Underground Friday night, according to Kristan Slover, a freshman undecided major.

The show, sponsored by the University Board, Sonor and the Office of Orientation, was part of Panther Preview Week, said Caleb Judy, vice chair of the UB.

Judy said the purpose of the event was to give freshmen an option of something to do their first weekend at Eastern.

However, the event was not just for freshmen, Judy said. “We want to let everyone know that we’re here to entertain them and get our name out,” he said.

Four Banger, made up of drummer Matt Seaton, guitarist Charlie Dicus and bassist Jason Schanzle, drew a crowd of around fifty playing a mix of modern rock and eighties pop rock covers.

Seaton, a senior music major, and Schanzle, a junior speech communication major, both attend Eastern, Schanzle said.

Dicus is a student at Southern Illinois University, where the band will record its debut album of original music in the fall, Schanzle said.

Schanzle said the band members, playing together for a year and eight months, just want to see people enjoying themselves at their shows.

“As long as the audience has a good time and has fun, that’s all we care about,” he said.

The band, featuring all three members as alternating lead singers, covered songs by Creed, Collective Soul, Green Day, Lit, U2, Bon Jovi, GooGoo Dolls, Bush and others, including several upbeat rock tunes from the eighties.

Slover said she enjoyed the event, and everyone she met there was very friendly. She said it provided a good environment to talk to people.

“It gets people to mingle,” she said.

Ryan Hajik, a freshman undecided major, said he enjoyed the music at the event. “It gets everyone together to have a good time and not drink,” he said.

Judy said the show started off the University Board’s mainstage series.

“Pretty much every Saturday there’s going to be a regional-type band at the 7th Street Underground,” he said.
