Senate member sparks idea to organize forums

In efforts to better communication between deans of colleges and students, one student senate member had the idea to organize forums.

A forum on the College of Sciences will be held at 7 p.m. today in the Life Sciences Building Room 2080.

Kristen Rutter, vice president for academic affairs, who helped Nick Owens, student dean, organize the forum, said she wanted to organize forums with every dean on campus.

“Some students are intimidated and don’t want to talk to the dean. This gives them that opportunity,” Rutter said.

Mary Anne Hanner, acting dean of the College of Sciences, and Owens will run the forum.

The forum will provide an opportunity for students in the college of sciences to express their concerns to the dean and student dean, said speaker of the senate Adam Weyhaupt in a press release.

All College of Science faculty have been invited to attend, Hanner said.

Students should attend the forum to learn more about the college and to try to get answers to any questions they might have, Hanner said.

“I hope to provide students with information and answers to questions,” Hanner said. “I also hope to meet and visit with students from the college, be familiar with their concerns.

“We might not be able to answer all their questions, but we will assist them as much as possible and direct them to more appropriate offices if necessary,” she said.

Last month, Rutter coordinated a forum with Elizabeth Hitch, the dean of education and professional studies.
