Still one month to register to vote in local elections

Students still have time to register to vote and participate in local government.

Students have until March 6 to register for the upcoming April 3 general election in a variety of ways, said Coles County Clerk Betty Coffrin.

The County Clerk’s office, the Charleston Library, the local Driver’s License Examining Station and soon the members of the Student Senate all will be able to register students to vote, Coffrin said.

Coffrin said voters will decide on township supervisor, township clerk, four township trustees, road commissioner and about half of the school board seats, Coffrin said. All of these are four-year terms.

One trustee for each park district, a six-year position, also will be on the ballot, Coffrin said.

“The upcoming election has many more positions on the ballot than most previous elections,” Coffrin said.

Overall voter turnout in these elections for local offices is usually 30 to 50 percent of the Charleston population, Coffrin said.

This number is even lower among Eastern students, she said.
