Today members of the Illinois Board of Higher Education will be on Eastern's campus.

There was something different about coming back to Eastern this semester. It took me awhile to figure out what it was, but I had this feeling that something had changed.

Upon arriving at Eastern most students probably have noticed some changes. But chances are they have only realized the minor changes. A lot more is different than a few more parking spaces and a few new flowers.

In the days of childhood, summer was a warm and sunny time, jam-packed with fun-filled days of running crazy around the neighborhood and spending lazy hours by the pool or in the sandbox.

In just a matter of days, many seniors will be making the big jump from college life to the "real world."

With only two months left in her term, Student Body President Katie M. Cox has not used her secret weapon. She has yet to flex all of the political muscle she has.

When I graduated from high school, the last column I wrote for the Wheeling High School Spokesman was a look at the movies that I thought best summed up what high school was really about. Of course, few movies accurately capture the high school experience, so the column was a bit far-fetched.

Eastern's basketball office is a small, neat space overlooking the Student Recreation Center. It is filled with plain wooden furniture and several simple plaques commemorating various occasions and awards hang from the white walls, with one exception.

The possibility of the cost of Textbook Rental rising significantly should scare all of student. It certainly affects all of us. and will make a major dent in everyone's pockets if any price changes are approved.

There is no doubt in my mind that Charleston is a relatively safe community to live in. Charleston certainly does not experience anywhere near the amount of violent crimes Chicago or New York do. But wouldn't it be nice to know if the person in your neighborhood or on your residence hall floor has done something seriously wrong that could potentially be a threat to you or your family?
