The Voices in Progress club is hosting an Open Mic Monday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. at 7th St. Underground.
Charity Abner, a junior psychology major and president of the Voices in Progress club, said the goal of the open mic is to present a chance for students to demonstrate their creativity in a safe environment.
“The purpose of this event is to help provide students an opportunity to not only express themselves but to also safely come together to connect,” Abner said.
“Whether it’s through a poem, song or dance we wanted to create a safe space for our fellow students to come and share their story however way they see fit.”
Abner noted that having a chance to be creative is important with the most stressful time of the school year coming up.
“We decided to put on this event to find a way to help students relieve the stress of midterms and upcoming finals. With the majority of classes being online we feel more and more disconnected and feel more alone,” Abner said. “We are hoping this event will help students alleviate whatever stress they are possibly enduring and give them the opportunity to have fun and relax.”
While there is a limit to how many people can attend due to COVID-19 protocol, Abner said she is they reach capacity so she can see as many performances as possible.
“I hope we are able to reach our max 30 because I really want to hear and see a lot of my fellow students perform but we will be able to make this a great experience with whoever decides to attend,” Abner said.
