Staff Report

Eastern’s Latino Heritage Month events will kick off Thursday at 6 p.m.

This year’s theme for the month is “Unidos somos más fuertes / United We Are Stronger.”

The month begins on September 15 and ends October 15.

The majority of events will be held online using streaming technology and links to the events can be found on the Office of Inclusion and Academic Engagement page of Eastern’s website.

The events for the month are:

· The first event will be a Zumba event on Facebook Live from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and will be led by Vero Cordero

· The Newman Catholic Center will host mass in Spanish Sunday at 11 a.m

· Charlando con los profesores, a faculty panel, will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. September 24 on Zoom

· Embracing the X in Latinx will be held via Zoom from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. September 29

· An event called Colorism will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. October 8 via Zoom

After the month is over an ofrenda contest will be held in the University Ballroom in the Martin Luther King Union.

An ofenda is a home altar that has a collection of objects that identify the person it is dedicated to.

Throughout the month a display called “Latinos and Social Change” will be up at Booth Library, Housing and Dining menus will feature options of Latin American foods and there will be a residence hall bulletin board contest that on-campus residents can ask their Resident Assistant about.

The Office of Inclusion and Academic Engagement, Latin American Student Organization, Alpha Psi Lambda, Newman Center, Amigos and Friends, the Department of World Languages, Students for Peace and Justice, Eastern’s admission office and Sigma Delta Pi were all apart of organizing events for the month.
