Rep. Bailey removed from House chamber for refusing to comply with face covering requirement

Staff Report

State Rep. Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) was escorted out of the Band of Springfield Center in Wednesday afternoon for refusing to comply with new House rules requiring face coverings that was passed with bipartisan support earlier Wednesday.

A motion was made to remove Bailey and was passed by a vote of 81-27.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker addressed Bailey’s removal in his press briefing Wednesday.

“The representative has shown a callous disregard for life, callous disregard for people’s health,” Pritzker said.

Bailey has been critical of Pritzker’s stay-at-home order in the past.

It was reported in the Chicago Sun Times Monday that State representatives Chris Miller (R-Oakland) and Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) were also contemplating not wearing face coverings, but complied with the new rules requiring them.

Bailey is currently running for Illinois State Senate in the 55th district.
