CFD buys 200 smoke detectors with grant

Staff Report

The Charleston Fire Department used a $3,000 fire prevention grants to purchase 200 smoke detectors.

The smoke detectors, that have a 10-year sealed battery, will be available for low-income households.

Fire Chief Steve Bennett said early detection is important.

“Early detection of a fire is key to survival, especially while occupants are sleeping,” Bennett said.

The grant was received from FM Global through its Fire Prevention Grant Program.

FM Global grants awards to fire departments and organizations worldwide that demonstrate a need for funding for preventing fires or reducing damage caused by fires.
