ITS to implement CAPTCHA to prevent brute force attacks

Staff Report

Joshua Awalt, the interim assistant vice president of information technology services, said a “CAPTCHA” will be added to Eastern’s login pages on Tuesday for specific applications, like Panthermail and Banner, to combat “brute force attacks” against user accounts.

Users will have to check the box below the password field and answer the question the CAPTCHA asks by selecting certain photographs in order to authenticate their logins, Awalt said in the email.

Additionally, Awalt said he recommended users to contact User Services at 217-581-4357 or email them at [email protected] if they encounter any further issues while logging in to their applications after the CAPTCHA has been added.

The email from Awalt was sent to users Friday last week.
