Mattoon hosted its annual Celebrate Downtown Mattoon Light Up the Night Festival and Parade on Dec. 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Braden Davis, a junior finance major, attended the celebration and said he had a great time.

“A few of my friends heard about the festival, so we decided to check it out. I did not realize how many people would be there or how much they were going to have for us to do. They had carriage rides and a ton of cool lights to look at,” Davis said.

Their were horse and carriage rides, train rides, food vendors, over 50 different characters in costumes, live music, kids tents and a light parade.

Peterson Park, a park located near the downtown area in Mattoon, is also hosting its annual light show. The park is lit up with different types of lights and structures made completely out of lights. It was also free for attendees to drive through.

Mike Sangpeal, a senior health studies major, said he enjoyed going to the annual celebration and the annual light show.

“I had a lot of fun going to both events and it was cool to see all of the different lit-up structures. My favorite was the giant Santa because not only was it completely lit-up, but it also moved,” Sangpeal said.
