A drug deal gone wrong resulted in one man being charged with two Class X felonies and another being wanted in connection to the incident in which shots were fired Thursday night.

Xaki Echols, 19, of Chicago was charged with home invasion and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Jamarius Carpenter, 19, of Chicago was still wanted in connection to the incident as of Friday.

According to a press release from the Charleston Police Department, a search warrant resulted in the seizure of 865 grams (1.9 pounds) of cannabis.

Additional charges may be forthcoming, according to the press release.

Echols and Carpenter went to an apartment at 2403 8th St. to complete a drug transaction where one of the suspects waved a weapon in an attempt to rob the occupants, according to the press release.

A single shot was fired within the apartment and three fired from the outside through a door into the apartment. The occupants were able to detain Echols until police arrived and arrested him. Echols was later treated at Sarah Bush for non-life threatening injuries.

Information regarding the whereabouts of Carpenter can be sent in a message to the Charleston Illinois Police Department’s Facebook page or to the Coles County Crime Stoppers via the mobile app.

The Eastern Illinois Police Department, Coles County Sheriff’s Department, Coles County Crisis Response Team, East Central Illinois Drug Task Force and the Coles County State’s Attorney Office assisted in the investigation, according to the press release.
