Sleep presentation aims to put students to rest

As part of a Healthy Spring Wellness series, the Health Education Resource Center will give a presentation on sleep.

“Snoozin’ like a Panther” is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Recreation Center’s meeting room. An open session will take place at the same time on April 11 in the Martinsville Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The presentation will show how having proper sleeping habits can impact students’ life in a positive way mentally, physically and academically.

Presenters will go over the effects of sleep on academics, how sleep affects overall health, how to have a good sleep routine and how to solve sleeping problems.

Emma Welton, health promotion coordinator for the HERC, said tips and tricks will be given to the audience on ways to improve their current sleep routine.

“We know that the college environment may foster a negative sleep routine,” Welton said. “Socializing, extra-curricular activities, jobs, school work and other factors may play a part in why students may not be getting the sleep that they need. Students who do not have a regular sleep schedule can expect low levels of energy, signs of depression and irritability, slow reaction times, less attention to details and social problems, to name a few of these consequences.”

Employees at the HERC are also available to give one-on-one sleep analysis for students. These sessions can be scheduled by making an appointment with a health promotion coordinator.
