Charleston woman arrested on 1st Degree Murder charge after death of child

Charleston resident Savannah Weiss, 22, was arrested Wednesday after she confessed to leaving her child unattended at her residence from Friday to Sunday, leading to the 2-year-old’s death.

At about 8:58 a.m., Charleston Police officers and paramedics from the Charleston Fire Department responded to a call of an unresponsive child at 1052 1st Street, according to a press release.

After arriving on scene, paramedics determined the child was dead, which was confirmed later by the Coles County Coroner.

Weiss was arrested on a 1st Degree Murder charge after an investigation.

The child’s autopsy revealed the preliminary cause of death to be dehydration and malnourishment.

Weiss was placed in the Coles County Safety and Detention, pending a court appearance.
