CAA to review Student Standards policies

The Council on Academic Affairs will review the policies of the Office of Student Standards as well as some course revisions during its meeting Thursday.

Marita Gronnvoll, the chair of the council, said Student Standards has been invited to attend the meeting to address some questions that members may have.

“The council would like clarification with regard to faculty responsibilities in reporting academic misconduct,” Gronnvoll said. “This is so we can properly word the syllabus statement about academic misconduct.”

A memorandum from Christopher Mitchell, interim associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, states there will be a revision in four different English courses effective in the 2015 fall semester.

The four classes to be renamed will be ENG 4761, ENG 4762, ENG 4763, ENG 4764, and the renamed courses will all be Advanced Nonfiction, Poetry, Fiction and Dramatic Writing.

The reason the courses are being renamed, according to the memo, is to accurately reflect what they will be covering in correlation with the curriculum.

In another memo from Harold Ornes, the dean of the college of sciences, talks about an agreement with Eastern and Lakeland College. The agreement will allow two introductory GIS courses to be taught at Lakeland College.

These classes will be able to be substituted with GEG 3810.

“There is a longstanding agreement between EIU and Lakeland that some courses taken at Lakeland would fulfill requirements for various majors here at EIU,” Gronnvoll said. “This is typically done on behalf of transfer students.”

There may also be another course name change. According to a second memo from Ornes, International Criminal Law may also receive a title change as well. The proposed change would be Human Rights and International Law.

The reason for the request is that the new name would better reflect course content.

The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday in Room 4440 of the Booth Library.
