University to launch smart phone application

Smart phone applications can be used for games, books, music and starting Monday, students can access information on the Eastern website.

Students and faculty will be able to check Panthermail, athletic events and academic information on their smart phones.

The application is already available to download, but is not yet fully functioning.

Mark Hudson, the director of University Housing & Dining Services, said the university believes the application will do really well and students will find it quite useful when on the go.

By providing all of the convenience of the Eastern website on phones, students will be able to find the information they want much faster.

One use for the new application is the access to the dining menus, which according to Hudson, is the most clicked link on the Eastern website.

Megan Mahan, a senior applied engineering and technology major, said a lot of students will use the application, especially to look up the dining menu.

“It’s everything about Eastern in one spot,” Mahan said.

Hudson said the creation of the application was a part of Eastern’s efforts to make more university information available via technology.

“What better way to make (the Eastern website) more convenient?” Hudson said.

The application will also offer more information, such as a campus map.

There will also be a social icon available on the application, which will allow students to access their social media information such as Twitter and Facebook.

Eastern’s information and technology services and the Center for Academic Technology Support worked together to create the application.

The application is free to download and is scheduled to be fully functional on Monday.
