Student Senate member resigns because of academics

This week Student Senate member Stephanie Cascio resigned because of academic reasons.

“It was harder than last week because I think she had a lot of potential and it will be a little rough to replace her,” said Student Senate Speaker Isaac Sandidge.

The person to replace her has to be an off-campus member. There is no word yet on who it will be.

There will also be two proposed bylaw changes this week at the meeting.

One is in regards to the housing hall council presidents.

“The Housing Committee keeps a list of phone numbers and now this will give them a chance to give their phone number plus an e-mail address,” Sandidge said. “It will make things more technological.”

The other proposed bylaw change will be an amendment to the section of bylaws in regard to Sandidge.

The name of the Committee of Legislative Leadership will be changed to the Council of Chairs.

The Student Senate speaker is the chair of the committee and must get together with the chairs of all the committees within Student Senate and Sandidge to talk about ideas with them. They will discuss legislation before it gets to the Senate so the members will be informed before a resolution or proposal is passed.

Questions will be answered on the proposed bylaw changes but voting will not take place until at least next week’s meeting.

Sandidge also said the Senate Mentorship Program is going well so far.

The Senate Mentorship Program is where committee chairs discuss certain things with all new Senate members.

Sandidge started the program this year.

Discussion will vary from office hours, dress, legislation, time management, parties, funding, dealing with intimidation and so on.

Committee chairs will have a separate meeting than their regularly scheduled committee meeting with new members and discuss these topics there.

In respect to dress, Sandidge said there is no set dress code, but that he would like the members to wear “business casual” clothing.

“There is no governing policy on what to wear,” he said. “We just want our senators to look nice and not wear sweats or anything.”
