Campus activities available to all Eastern students

So all the bags are unpacked, the first week of classes is over and you are settled in at Eastern. You ask yourself, now what?

There seems to be plenty of things to do, but how exactly you go about them is difficult. As a freshman or transfer student, it is helpful to get involved on campus in order to adjust to the college experience.

“My RA in Carman Hall was really friendly and helpful at our floor meeting. By meeting people it is easier to make the transition to college.” said freshman Jenni Chiariello.

Even if you are an upperclassman, it is never too late to start an activity. After all, you are only in college once.

“As a transfer student, I got involved with national organizations which helped with my major. I am involved with math energy to help with my education major,” said Mary Vashkelis, senior elementary education major. “Being involved in a sorority has also given me many leadership opportunities and lifelong friends.”

The beginning of the academic school year is the best time to get involved and make a fresh start. Many organizations are looking for new members who recently graduated last spring.

“I tell parents during freshman orientation that getting involved helps students transition to college better and makes them feel at home,” said Bob Dudolski, director of Greek Life. “Students with leadership positions obtain better jobs.”

Whether you are interested in continuing what you did during high school or starting something different, being involved with extracurricular activities on campus provides students with many short-term and long-term benefits.

“Nationwide, greek students have a higher retention and graduation rate,” he said.

Some programs can even help you with a career direction. Whether it is sports, music, dance, student goverment, greek life, volunteer work or honor societies which interest you, Eastern offers over 200 Recognized Student Organizations to join.

Dudolski said students build a better relationship with the university by getting involved and therefore make better alumnae.

“With the university’s size, you don’t get a chance to meet people and getting involved helps you meet more people and build better friendships.” said Dudolski. “Just get involved in something, even if it’s just your academic club. It’s better than sitting in your room watching TV.”
