Wunder inks guard, forward for fall

Women’s basketball head coach Linda Wunder continued her recruiting season this week, signing two more players to the fall.

Sarah Riva, a 5-foot-9-inch guard, will be joining the Panthers from West Frankfort High School while a 6-foot forward, Misty Evans, has committed from Peoria (Manual High School).

Riva is a former high school teammate of current Panther center Brooke Gossett and and joins Eastern’s team after averaging 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals per game during her senior season.

The guard was a member of the state tournament team her freshman year and was a Second Team IBCA All-State pick, scoring 1.452 career points.

“Sarah played a lot of point guard during her early years, but last year she played the off-guard which is where we will probably play her,” Wunder said in a press release. “She has the ability to be a scorer – that’s what we brought her for. Sarah makes good decisions and can handle the basketball.”

Evans earned All-Mid-State 9 Conference and all-area honors after averaging 14.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. She also combined to block 69 shots last season.

“I think Misty’s best playing days are ahead of her,” Wunder said. “She has a tremendous amount of potential.

“She’s a good athlete with the ability to play inside and out. One of the things I liked about her was she played good defense both on the perimeter and in the post. Misty is just starting to scratch the surface of what she is capable of.”

Riva and Evans join Rachel Karos and Ashley Kearney, who both signed in the fall, bringing Wunder’s second recruiting class to four. She is still looking for possibly two more players before the 2001-2002 season.
