EIUnity to unify campus with music

Music will attempt to unite the campus tonight.

The first annual “Unite The Nite: Music Fest 2001” will be held at 6 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The event was designed by EIUnity, a campus group dedicated to the teachings of acceptance, tolerance and peace.

The purpose of the primarily music-oriented festival is to unite students with common tastes and give them a chance to get to know one another, said Lisa Lopez, EIUnity member.

EIUnity will sponsor the performances of several local bands including 11& Cleveland, Urban Harmony, Hello Dali and Illusions. Lopez said each band incorporates a different variety of music, giving students more than one specific type of sound to listen to.

“(By organizing this event) we just wanted to unify everyone in culture in music,” Lopez said. “It is (mainly) a focus on music.”

She said through this event, students will have the opportunity to see a blend of different musical acts.

Lopez credited the rest of her group for their tedious work and endless effort in putting this event together.

“We have about six to seven people involved actively in the group,” she said. “We sat down and put a whole bunch of ideas together. I am so excited that we pulled it off. We did a lot more advertising for this event than we did our previous one.”

Lopez said the group’s advisers, Shirley Stewart and Johnetta Jones, were of great assistance to the group.

Admission to the event is free and open to all students.
