‘Lets talk about sex’ workshop to teach communication

Students looking for a better way to communicate in relationships will have an opportunity to learn some new skills tonight.

“Sex, Sex, Let’s Talk About Sex,” a presentation and discussion, will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in the Mattoon/Charleston Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Katie Sprouls, a graduate student and outreach member, will lead the informal discussion about sex and relationships.

“(This topic) gives the students the opportunity to learn how to communicate better,” Sprouls said. “It gives them the opportunity to talk back and forth.”

Sprouls will first give a short talk about sex and relationships, then pass out a handout the group will do together. The handout will help the student learn about communication, sex and relationships.

Sprouls said she will adapt the presentation to the amount of students attending. If it is a small group there will be an informal discussion.

The main point Sprouls will discuss is how alcohol, promiscuity and communication can affect relationships. Sprouls said students will learn “at what point alcohol” enters the equation and how it can affect the person in a sexual relationship, “how promiscuity can affect you and other people as well” and how communication and the way people feel can have a “positive or negative” affect on the relationship.
