Condoms 101 to be held tonight

Moments of fumbling in the dark attempting to properly apply a condom can be avoided with a little hands-on experience.

Tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Carman Hall Lobby Copa Room, Eric Davidson, assistant director for the Health Education Resource Center, and Katie Rezinas, a committee member on the Health Awareness Campaign are facilitating a workshop featuring all anyone ever wanted to know about condoms.

Condoms 101 is a hands-on type of workshop, Davidson said. “We will be discussing a lot of different things,” he said.

“We are also going to discuss how to use a condom from start to finish,” Davidson said. “(Students) will receive hands-on opportunities to demonstrate that they know how to properly put a condom on.”

Students will practice putting condoms on wooden penis models called “woodies,” Davidson said. There might also be a time when students will practice putting condoms on the “woodies” in the dark.

Davidson and Rezinas will offer feedback to those who are not putting on the condoms properly as well as feedback to those who do, Davidson said.

Davidson and Rezinas will also discuss why it is so important for a person to carry a condom even if that person is not sexually active and the different types and styles of condoms. They will also talk about how to check if a condom is still good and why it is important to do so, Rezinas said.

Another topic of discussion is about the safest sex, abstinence, Rezinas said. She will explain exactly what abstinence is and why people choose abstinence.

Davidson and Rezinas will also talk a little about the pros and cons of condom use along with providing statistics on the effectiveness of condoms compared to other types of protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

After the discussions, Davidson and Rezinas will answer any questions from students. Davidson said they will give away free condoms and lubricants to attendees.

Condoms 101 is being offered in awareness of national condom week and men’s and women’s sexual health awareness month.
