Glassman responds to budget questions

Staff Report

Though some Facilities, Planning and Management workers are seeing layoffs at the end of the summer, they are not part of the university-wide expense reduction plan, according to a letter President David Glassman sent to employees Thursday morning.

“These layoffs are the regularly occurring layoffs of our temporary summer staff that take place each year at this time as summer projects come to an end,” Glassman states in the letter. “It is unrelated to the budget adjustment that the university is undergoing.”

A page of frequently asked questions Glassman linked to in his letter also indicates that annual appropriated funding for athletics would be cut “by no less than 20 percent,” and other cost reductions in athletics are being explored.

Other clarifications listed specify that the children of employees who have lost their jobs can still receive tuition waivers if they are already attending Eastern, and the number of university fleet vehicles would be decreased as another cost-saving method.

The entire list can be found on the Human Resources page on the Eastern website, which indicates it will be regularly updated.

Glassman states in his Thursday letter that he has been asked several questions in the past couple weeks to verify rumors heard from others or read online about efforts to balance the budget.

“Unfortunately, during difficult and challenging situations, misinformation and rumors become commonplace,” Glassman states in his letter. “In the spirit of openness, transparency and timeliness, I will do my best to keep you updated.”
