Righter to give state budget update

Staff Report

State Sen. Dale Righter will give a legislative update during a town hall meeting he is sponsoring Tuesday in Mattoon.

Righter (R-Mattoon), representing the 55th Senate district containing Eastern, will speak about the current goings on in Springfield.

Some topics he will cover include the spring and summer legislative sessions, the state budget and other issues affecting the district.

The General Assembly is still considered to be in a special session despite the fiscal year having begun on July 1, meaning universities like Eastern still do not know how much funding they will receive from the state.

Gov. Bruce Rauner originally proposed a 31.5 percent cut to higher education, but the legislature later proposed a 6.5 percent cut, which is what Eastern accounted for in its budget approved by the Board of Trustees in June.

The town hall meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Lumpkin Family Center, 1000 Health Center Drive, Mattoon.
