Letter to the Editor: Obama supports students

As a former professor, I know how busy and preoccupied college students are. Your world spins with the demands of classes, social life, and preparation for the job market.

This fall, however, is the Presidential election, which has consequences for all Eastern students. Consider these benefits made under President Barack Obama’s administration.

• Parents under the Affordable Care Act can now provide health insurance coverage for you until you reach age 26. This provision of the much-maligned “Obamacare” health care act protects you even if you don’t land that dream job immediately after graduation.

• President Obama has streamlined college financial aid by skipping the banks’ role in lending and doubling the funding for Pell grants. He has also established a loan forgiveness program that rewards faithful loan payers and gives a bonus to those in public service jobs like teaching.

Don’t take these student-friendly advances for granted. Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential candidate, has proposed a federal budget that would remove one million students from qualifying for Pell grants and would reduce the amount of a grant for others.

In a close election, college students’ votes can make a difference. Show your support for the Presidential ticket that looks out for your interests by registering to vote and then casting your vote for President Barack Obama.
